It's been a long morning. It's pouring here in New York. The weather's got me all kinds of messed up.
So Steph in the City got me thinking about this patriarchal society we live in. Her post was in reference to Sean Connery's comment on slapping around women in a Barbara Walters interview and Mel Gibson's latest fiasco.
Now if you don't already know what was so wrong and irked the crap out of me in those statements, well, I'm about to tell you.
Where the hell do men think its right to hit women from?
I grew up in a household where whatever my dad said goes.
AND It brought more than enough problems with my rebellious self.
This past year we saw Rihanna and Chris Brown's domestic violence case and now we got men admitting to this way of thinking. Last I checked, love doesn't include physical pain... unless you're into THAT kind of stuff. (I don't need to elaborate.)
I'm annoyed by this. I don't want my future male children thinking this is okay and growing up around people who believe that this is the way to treat women. I don't want my husband-boyfriend-significant other to ever think this is okay. Like I said, I grew up in this type of household. I don't need the continuance of my childhood to stem into my adulthood because males think this is the right way to act.
Connery saying that its okay to shut a woman up by striking them is fucked up. How the hell would he feel if his son in law beat the living crap out of his daughter because she wouldn't shut up? I'm pretty sure he would not be happy.
I've seen what things like this leads to. It led to my mother being deaf in one ear. It led to women dying. It led to families falling apart. Then there are the audacious and bold women who FIGHT BACK. (This would be me.) The scars from the fights, the mental, the physical, etc... Those scars last a lifetime. You get over it, yes. But how do you go from an aggravated argument to a physical altercation and then have the nerve to say you love her? Her being any kind of female role. I never understood this. I will never get it.
I just hope that males growing up around me know better and do not treat their women the same way they wouldn't want some man treating their mothers or daughters or as the media portrays it.
This is what I tell guys to watch when they think they could treat women like shit...
That could be you lying on the floor because you're girlfriend got fed up with you.

Violence is unacceptable from either male or female. There are women out there who take advantage of the fact that men "can't" hit them to be abusive and get away with it.
I'm a firm a believer that there are two sides to every story.
As human beings we have the divine right to defend ourselves when our lives are threatened.
Also as humans, we've all lost it at one point or another (NOT EXCUSING THESE MEN), but there are always TWO sides to every story.
