Ok, Im no angel but things like this disturb me. Increasing the grade for diplomas and the dept of ed taking over parental responsibilities is DISTURBING!
First off, where does the DOE get off thinking that everyone wants to go to college? HELLO! Most kids hate school and a lot of them dont consider college as the next step in their paths. A lot of kids consider the military, straight to jobs, entertainment careers, amongst other things. On top of the fact, that most of us have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to attend college, you want to make it harder for kids and LESS APPEALING to want to go attend school by forcing them into trying to get above a 75 for a regents diploma??!
Id understand if the regents diploma meant something. But guess what? It just shows that the kid isnt trying to be mediocre and average. Local diplomas dont mean much and dont stand in for much. The regents diploma is the next step and it requires the student to pass 5 state required regents at a 65 or higher for it. The step after that is an advanced regents diploma where you take the required 5 and pass the optional 4. At least this is the setup from when I was in HS 3 years ago. Since then, things have changed. Especially in the mathematical setup of the regents.
So anyway, Im just annoyed at that. Does the DOE really think kids are going to want to try harder? These exams are tough as it is! I should know, I busted my ass for these. And Im not a dumb person. I was that kid who went to school and didnt have to do much to pass. If I gave a little effort, I wouldve passed with higher grades than I had. SMH!
Then the other article that pissed me off: Why does the DOE feel the need to take up what is parental responsibility in their own hands? Look, lets be real, DOE you are NOT my child's parent. And what my child does is MY responsibility. Let a effing teacher tell me while I was in HS that what Im texting is inappropriate. What fucking business is it of yours? Im not having sex with you. I may not even be having relations with anyone. I could be a dirty talking virgin and you think that its your business to tell me what I say on MY PHONE is your business enough to suspend me for up to 90 days??! GTFOH!
I understand schools dont want texting in school, but what is being texted is our personal business and privacy. I dont see why anyone besides parents should be worrying about what is being texted. Its up to the parent to choose how they want their child's accessibility on these phones to go. How these phones are being used and etc. Also, if the parent isnt the one paying for the phone, instead its the kid, with their money and their own name on the bill, it becomes the kids business. No one elses. Yup thats how I feel. You just better hope that kid dont come home with a kid of its own.
Ive had a phone since I was 12 years old. I am definitely one of those technology advanced kids. Ive done what is now being called "sexting" however it was up to my MOTHER and FATHER to tell me what to do if they wanted to look through my stuff. (And my mom did try one time and what did I the rebellious teenager do? Break my phone. =) It was a flip, easy to break, I dont like my stuff being snooped... My mom and I already had similar issues with notes! Imagine a phone with dirty stuff added into the mix.)
Anyway, what do you guys think?

Yeah, you got that one right. Not EVERYONE wants to go to college. Maybe in an ideal world, yes they would, but this is the real world, so no, not all of them actually would.
Oh, by the way, if you like, drop comments at my newest blog at www.thelunaticsdiary.blogspot.com and please follow. It's a new blog.
Agreed. College isn't for all. Just as the military isn't for all, or the PeaceCorp. We're all different folks.
True. I hated school my whole life, yet managed to get top grades. I went to college because I wanted to increase my getting a better paying job...I didn't really know what I wanted to be.
*sigh*
Texting in class is just plain wrong and should be harshly punished. Anywhere else it is no one's business but the texter's and textee's.
My folks made a big deal about me getting a regents diploma, I nearly killed myself trying to get one, and did. Ironically back in the late 80s you could take music classes instead of a third year o math or science and when I went to interview at colleges outside of NY, they wanted three years of math and science. In other words, the regents meant nothing to the out of state schools. I bet if I had been in easier math and science classes with higher grades, it would have looked better.
The only way I could see that what you're texting would be a teacher's business is if cheating was going on...which is where I could see them looking over a student's shoulder to see what those texts say. I'm shocked texting is still allowed in school at all, because of the cheating factor.
